Flying training in the Snowdonia Rotary - Mountain Flying Training Area (MFTA)
The Royal Navy deployed two Sea King HC.4s from 836 Naval Air Squadron based at RNAS Yeovilton to the MFTA. It was operating in area 'X-Ray' and 'Whiskey' most of the day and in this valley for over an hour off and on.
The training included remote tactical landings high on mountain ridges and on uneven (hard and soft) terrain. When a location had been identified by the pilots then a series of decreasing low approaches were made before touching down. The thrid member of the crew looked out of the side door to advise the pilot of and landing hazards and the distance thye were above the ground.
