70 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton joined the growing number of air bases and aircraft owners to hold a night photo-shoot to raise money for a good cause. 70 Squadrons objective was to raise £5,000 for the Jon Egging Trust, the 200 attending photographers ensured that their target was achieved.
As the RAFs transport hub the biggest aircraft in their inventory were on hand and positioned under lights including mobile units to ensure that these big beasts could be fully illuminated. The aircraft on display along the dispersal were; a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, Airbus A330 Voyager KC.2, Airbus A400M Atlas and a Lockheed C130J Hercules C.5. Out of place in the line-up were a de Havilland DHC.1 Chipmunk and a Shorts Skyvan. As a bonus for those with telephoto lenses were additional A330 Voyagers and A400M Atlas which were parked under the base lighting adjacent to the roped off area for the photographers.
Following a high level of security checks and a safety briefing we could walk along the display line, unfortunately low thick cloud spoiled any chance of sunset shots. The darkness soon enveloped the heavies and the lights began to play their part in the scene. Well into the night the Chipmunk, A400M and the C-130J performed engine runs.
