Founded in 1980 by aviators Gene and Russ Strine, the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum (MAAM) is located at Reading Regional Airport. The museum began with the recovery of a rare Northrop P-61 Black Widow night fighter from a 7,000 foot mountain in New Guinea, an ambitious project with the goal of returning it to flying condition.
Today, MAAM has a collection of 125 aircraft, memorabilia displays, archives, as well as a membership base of more than a thousand people. The museum has a passionate team of volunteers who assist with aircraft restoration, museum operations, and special events. Their dedication also brings to life MAAM's annual World War II Weekend, held each June, the largest World War II reenactment in North America. MAAM actively restores historic warbirds, classic airliners, and rare civilian and military aircraft, many of which appear at airshows across the country.
Having written this, my visit was somewhat disappointing. In 2014 the museum acquired ten t-hangars and along with an adjacent hangar they were all closed to the public. To make matters worse, about half of the restored, airworthy aircraft had been moved to the far side of the airfield for an event. What remained was only a small selection in the main hangar and a scattered, weathered group of aircraft outside on the ramp. |
