The first Guardians were delivered for testing in June 1950 before entering service on aircraft carriers in December of that year. Guardians served on Navy carriers until 1955 when the last of them were sent to reserve squadrons before their retirement from military service in 1957. Of the 389 Guardians built only five survived scrapping when purchased for conversion for firefighting. They flew with the Aero Union Corporation in California until 1973. Left to right: Boeing TB-29 Superfortress (44-70016) named 'Sentimental Journey' in honor of the Les Brown hit sung by Doris Day. It was assigned to the 330th Bombardment Group, based on Guam. It flew 32 combat missions from June to August of 1945. Damaged by flak during the last mission, which lead to a mid-air collision but was still able to safely land. Repaired it was put into the air one more time over Tokyo, flying over the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945 during the surrender ceremony. In 1969, it was donated to the Museum. The B-29 first flew in 1942 and carried more bombs higher, farther, and faster than any other bomber of World War II. Of the 3,970 B-29s built, around 26 complete B-29s survive today, 24 in the US.
