The Will Rogers-Wiley Post Memorial Seaplane Base (W36) is on the northern outskirts of Renton Airport, south of Seattle. The seaplane base consists of a concrete launch ramp, seaplane dock and ramp space on Renton Airport.
Humorist Will Rogers (1879-1935) and aviator Wiley Post (1898-1935) together took-off from Renton Airport on August 7, 1935 bound for Alaska with plans to fly onward to Siberia and beyond. Sadly a week later they died when their airplane crashed. The City of Renton chose to remember these heroes in 1949 by naming the refurbished floatplane facility the Will Rogers-Wiley Post Memorial Seaplane Base. |
