2013 Air Academy photo shoots |
The 2013 Air Academy with Eric Coeckelberghs leading his Aviation PhotoCrew support team was this year centred around the Sanicole air show at Leopoldsburg in Belgium. It's aim was to offer serious photographers the opportunity to photograph aircraft of all types air to air. 50 photographers assembled at the small airfield for up to seven days, I was there for just four of those days. This was long enough to have a Skyvan flight and two backseat rides. The Skyvan flight gave me the chance to shoot a Skyraider, Hunter and F-16 Fighting Falcon at 7,500 feet. Earlier in the week I was flying with Hanno Wesdorp in the back of his AT-6 Texan shooting a Skyriader and an Avenger. Unfortunately bad weather curtailed this shoot before it got going, in fact the weather tried to spoil a number of the planned shoots, my 'super warbird' flight with six or seven warbirds was cancelled all together on the Saturday. I did manage to get a flight in a Dorner Do-27 in what was billed as a 'mixed formation' flight and was with a Chipmunk, two Yak-18s and a Speed Canard.
When you were not flying there were still many subjects to photograph as you can see below. The Air Academy is not just about air to air, its provides the chance to meet fellow photographs and make friends and gain contacts. Following on from last years Air Academy where I was asked by Aviation News to write an article (see link above) I have already done some exciting joint assignments
with a new Academy member.
